Photographer of Megaliths

Portrait de Zulaan photographe des mégalithes devant un avion de tourisme, le Diamond DA 40
Welcome !

I am André Polkowski, also known as Zulaan

I specialize in photographing Neolithic remnants, approaching the subject with an artistic eye. I venture out only in mist, clouds, wind, and rain, seeking moods and atmospheres that awaken the imagination.
I see myself as a contemplative photographer, devoted to monochrome imagery, nostalgic for the analog realm, with Brittany (France) as my favorite hunting ground.

Next exhibition: “Portraits of Megaliths”

On September 20 and 21, 2025, at the Espace Culturel de la Vigie in La Trinité-sur-Mer, I will present my black-and-white series Carnac: Punctuations, drawn from the book of the same name created in collaboration with Les Vaisseaux de Pierres.
This event is part of the European Heritage Days and the celebration of the inscription of the megalithic sites of Carnac and the Morbihan shores on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Free admission – 10:30 am to 1 pm / 3 pm to 6:30 pm.

The Hunt for Megaliths

An exceptional tool !

Capturing the megaliths with the Q2 Monochrom was an unforgettable experience. The camera proved remarkably precise, delivering dynamic images of extraordinary depth. Its compact size made it a discreet, all-terrain companion. I was, without doubt, utterly won over.
Below are a few images from the book.

Megalithic Landscapes

Earth, sea, sky, and beyond: horizons in images

The hunt for megaliths is a thrilling pursuit. One traverses breathtaking landscapes, and imagination takes flight. Just a few millennia ago, these very places were trodden by those who raised these silent stones.

As I wander through these lands, my eye and my camera remain ever alert to the beauty of storm-laden horizons. In this section, I invite you to discover a small selection of these territories in their raw purity, revealed through timeless black-and-white landscapes.

Megaliths from the Sky

Why choose the airplane?

Photographing specific sites from an airplane requires both agility and preparation. Even flying relatively low and at slow speed, the aircraft offers only a few seconds to spot the target, frame it, and release the shutter. Perspectives differ greatly from those on the ground, and landmarks are constantly playing hide-and-seek.

Yet the advantage is considerable: in a session of an hour and a half to two hours, it becomes possible to cover a large number of sites, scattered far apart from one another. Not to mention the sheer joy and freedom of brushing the sky and clouds with the tip of the lens…
